The benefits of health insurance are compelling. University students are in the age group (19-24) most likely to be uninsured. They also can be underinsured; students are much more mobile for the first time and may spend 8 or 9 months out of their home provider vicinity. Illinois State University requires students to have comprehensive health and accident insurance and includes a plan of benefits in tuition and fees. Even though most of our students have primary insurance, the Student plan paid over $4 million dollars last year which would have been someone’s out-of-pocket expenses. You are not required to keep this plan, however 92% of our students do keep it for these reasons:

1. If you have deductibles or co-insurance on an employer group plan, the Student Insurance can pay those amounts. HMOs and PPOs can limit coverage unless certain providers are used. Compensation could be 100% by coordinating the two plans. At a time when families can ill afford out of pocket expenses for medical care, keeping the student plan can close those gaps. Consider these questions:

2. What would I save by dropping my present coverage on this student and keeping the ISU plan?

Before making this decision, consider the fact that the student plan has a strong pre-existing exclusion such that conditions present before the coverage is in force will not be compensable until the student has been insured with us for one year. In those cases, consider keeping both plans for at least the first year. During the first year, new illnesses and new injuries would be covered, but the pre-existing condition would not be payable by Student Insurance.

If Student Insurance will be the only plan, it is especially important that you arrange for Summer coverage. Insured Spring students are eligible to do so by paying $116 prior to the end of Spring term, thereby continuing the plan between May and August. Students enrolled for at least 6 summer credit hours by May 27, 2008 are assessed the Summer premium with tuition and fees.

3. Student Insurance has a $1,000,000 maximum

Student Insurance deductible is waived if you have other insurance

Student Insurance deductible is $50 if you have no other coverage

We pay our normal benefits, or the remaining eligible charges left after primary insurance has processed the claim up to 100%

An optional dental and prescription discount plan is available. No dental/prescription coverage is included in the Student Insurance plan unless this optional plan is purchased (an additional $46 per year). This plan is available through The Chickering Web site at www.chickering.com. Click on discount plans, Vital Savings.

Insurance cancellation requests are due prior to the 15th calendar day Fall and Spring, and the 8th calendar day Summer. With the request, you need to provide evidence of other coverage. The easiest method is to show a copy of your other insurance card.

Note: Students have the same access and cost structure when using the Student Health Service whether they have the Student Insurance Plan or not. The policy contains language which describes the plan and takes precedence over this summary. Plan booklet and i.d. card are available at www.shs.ilstu.edu/insurance.
